Julián Mesri •LATA 2025 Extraordinary Award for Best Play Adaptation “The Comedy of Errors”
•The LATA Awards (Latin Alternative Theater Awards), created by Héctor Luis Productions under the direction of Héctor Luis Sin Censura, have celebrated Latino alternative theater since 2017 in New York, New Jersey and nearby areas. These awards not only honor local artists but also recognize international organizations, institutions and artists who have played a significant role in this artistic evolution. It is a platform that seeks to highlight the contribution and importance of alternative art in these communities, providing recognition to those who have promoted and enriched this field.
Julián Mesri is a New York-based Argentinean-American playwright and composer who makes multilingual plays and musicals in the US and around the world. He is the co-adaptor and composer/lyricist for the Mobile Unit bilingual production of Comedy of Errors at the Public Theater (Drama Desk Nominee, LATA Award Winner).
He is currently the Judith Champion Musical Theater Launchpad Resident at Signature Theater. He received anEST/Sloan Commission for his musical Favaloro: A Heart in Pieces. Recent work includes Telo (Live and In Color Finalist, O’Neill NMTC Finalist), Last Coffee in Rockville (NAMT Finalist), and Bartolomé de las Casas Ruins My Pool (O’Neill NPC Finalist). Other work includes creating a full live score of Henry 6 at The Old Globe, directing/arranging Songs About Trains with Radical Evolution, music directing and co-orchestrating Brian Quijada’s Somewhere Over the Border (Syracuse Stage, Geva Theater). He is a Core Writer at the Playwrights Center and has been a member of the Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, a Dramatist Guild Fellow, anEmerging Artist of Color Fellow and Usual Suspect at NYTW, and a Van Lier fellow at Repertorio Español. His adaptation of Fuenteovejuna received the HOLA Outstanding production award. He has also translated dramatic works for the Lark US/Mexico Exchange and PEN World Voices. He received his MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University.
•Mesri will receive his award on March 31 2025 at the LATA Benefit Gala commemorating International Theatre Day at the William V. Musto Cultural Center in Union City, NJ.
